A-Level Further Mathematics Tutoring
Additional A-Level British qualification for students who want advanced mathematics. Taken in parallel with A-Level Mathematics and opens access to the most competitive university programs in mathematics, physics, engineering and quantitative economics.
What is A-Level Further Mathematics
A-Level Further Mathematics is a distinct A-Level qualification, more advanced than A-Level Mathematics. Standard codes: Cambridge International 9231, Edexcel 9FM0, AQA 7367.
It must be taken alongside A-Level Mathematics — it cannot be taken separately. In the Year 12-13 syllabus, the student studies regular mathematics (Pure, Mechanics, Statistics) and, in addition, the Further modules that extend each area with concepts of early university level.
Top universities (Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, Warwick, UCL, MIT, ETH Zürich) frequently require Further Mathematics as a prerequisite for Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics programs — or at least strongly recommend it.
Further Mathematics components
- ›Further Pure Mathematics — complex numbers, matrices, 3D vectors, differential equations, hyperbolic functions, polar coordinates, power series
- ›Further Statistics — bivariate distributions, ANOVA, chi-squared tests, multiple regression, Markov chains, Poisson processes
- ›Further Mechanics — moments, rigid body dynamics, circular motion, elastic collisions, oscillations
- ›Decision Mathematics — algorithms (Dijkstra, Kruskal, Prim), graphs, linear programming, game theory, simulations
Who needs / should take it
- ›Mathematics, Physics, Engineering at competitive universities — frequently required
- ›Computer Science at Oxford, Imperial, Cambridge — strongly recommended
- ›Economics at LSE, Warwick — recommended for the quantitative profile
- ›Actuarial Science, Statistics — essential
Grading
Same scale as A-Level Mathematics: A* – E. Typical entry requirements at competitive programs are A* in Mathematics + A* in Further Mathematics, plus other subjects.
PhD in mathematics, statistics specialty
Further Mathematics includes advanced modules (stochastic processes, differential equations, multivariate statistics) that overlap with Dr. Georgiana Popovici's PhD area — Mathematical Statistics, specialty obtained at the University of Bucharest in 2008.
14 years at Cambridge School of Bucharest (Head of Department) and Teaching Assistant at the Department of Probability and Statistics (University of Bucharest, 2002-2016) — a rarely-encountered combination at the pre-university level.
In 2019, one of her students received the Top in the World award for Cambridge A-Level Mathematics.
